Saw Tim Burton's Batman Returns on the big screen again after three decades and far as I'm concerned: the best onscreen incarnation of the character ever

Thoughts on Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein (2025):

If you don't know anything about the film know this: he spent eighteen years sketching, researching, talking to make this, his Great White Whale film adaptation. Worth a look? Well let me tell you.

Wooden stake, garlic wreaths, three-day waiting period -- we have protocols to follow, dammit!

Thoughts on Jerrold Tarog's biopic Quezon (showing in select American theaters):

Start right off with a caveat: not a historian, merely a student of film. I can talk of visual style, but of historical facts about the period and details of the man himself?

Saw Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day again and -- Godfather? What Godfather?

Belatedly Adam Greenberg (1939-2025)-- The Big Red One, The Terminator, Near Dark. He did some good work: the gritty cinematography of Cameron's breakout feature; the poetry of Bigelow's vampire flick, particularly the glow of a fiery desert sunrise; the no-budget epic range of Fuller's masterpiece

Paalam Diane Ladd (1935-2025). Made her mark playing supporting roles -- but what a mark! The crimson demonface in Wild at Heart, the golden-glamour host in Inland Empire, the earthy no-bullshit waitress in baby pink in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Can't forget her if I tried

Dick Cheney (1941-2025). Once I'd have called him the face of absolute evil-- but boy nowadays he's relatively kindergarten
November 4, 2025 at 1:29 PM
Paalam Peter Watkins (1935-2025)-- pioneer of the mockumentary and brilliant relentlessly political, his Punishment Park and The War Game rank as some of the greatest of horrors

"I’d like to become the first insect politician..."

"I don’t know what you’re trying to say!"

"I’m saying I’m an insect who dreamt he was a man...but now the dream is over and the insect is awake."

"No no Seth"

"I’m saying: I’ll hurt you if you stay."

(Thoughts on M Night Shyamalan's Signs):

"Shyamalan's latest shows no sign whatsoever of him apologizing for his career to date. His first movie was a hit his second an interesting failure; in Signs he wants to make beievers out of all of us. (Link to article below)

DIANE KEATON (1946-2025). Paalam Kay Adams, Luna Schlosser, Sonja, Annie Hall, Theresa Dunn, Louise Bryant, Faith Dunlap, Charlie Ross. She was smart, sexy, not a little dangerous. She made you fall for her and she broke your heart, the way she does all of ours with her passing.

Saying this out loud: have not always been a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson. His work strikes me as often stylish but half-baked, with bravura passages of filmmaking

Claudia Cardinale (1938-2025)

-- not perhaps the greatest film she was involved in (it's great, but the competition!) just the one I've written about.
