Agree it is a tricky problem to solve on the part of small non-profits. I would still insist they are obligated to work to solve it. (I started my conservation career in a paid internship with a small environmental non-profit, QLF).

Unpaid internships reproduce the class problem in conservation. I don’t blame individuals for taking them (though would encourage them to reflect on who can/can’t afford to do so). I do find organizations offering them problematic - it shows me their politics. But you already know all this :)

Similarly, wondering if those able to attend could volunteer to give a talk for someone who can’t come - would require clean slides and script well ahead of time - volunteers essentially read - but if done well, might capture more attention than a recording. Could provide feedback form as above
