I'd love to see more work enrolling people in low-fare programs; by my estimate less than 25% of eligible people are enrolled in Fair Fares. It seems like we generally price discriminate the wrong way; people with transit benefits get ~30% off their fares via taxes (4/5)

I can see why they wanted to build in some grace for first time offenders, but it's tough to see how this survives. It doesn't make a lot of sense to weaken fines and increase enforcement at the same time. (3/5)

The data: 167M evaded subway rides per year, ~147k arrests/citations means that 1 in 1,140 subway fare evasions get cited. At high enforcement stations (60 citations per 100k rides), your expected cost is $116.49 annually, down from $205.45 - a 43% decline (2/5)

But I also don't want to avoid going if I really am sick! Are people going to trust an amateur's opinion - even if they do remind you of your grandma?

It sort of makes sense - nobody wants to go to the doctor unnecessarily. I don't want to get a $200 bill, the insurance company doesn't want to pay for it, and the doctor wants to spend their time on real patients.
