I am not proud of these actions. I’ve grown. I’ve reflected. I’ve spiraled in the shower. And I want to own my past before it owns me. Here is a list of the most cancelable things I’ve ever done: • One time I accidentally stole a 12-pack of soda from a chain grocery store because it was on the bottom rack of my cart. I got all the way home before I noticed. I did not drive back. I drank all 12 stolen sodas. • In high school, after a particularly shitty day, all I wanted was an orange Hi-C from McDonald’s. They gave me iced tea. I screamed. Then I threw the cup at the side of the building. I did not retrieve it. I just drove away and told no one. Until now. • I’ve RSVP’d “yes” to birthday parties I knew I’d never attend. Then faked food poisoning with far too much detail. • In 2016 I claimed to be “off-grid” to avoid my friend group. I was actively posting on Snapchat stories during that time. • I have knowingly let people say my name wrong—and/or use the wrong name entirely—for years. Entire friendships. Whole jobs. Just didn’t feel like correcting them. One person still thinks my name is “Michelle.” We’ve hugged. • I used to tell people I was allergic to banana flavoring because I didn’t want to explain my disdain for bullshit flavored candies. • I have Googled the phrase “how to get rid of a body, effectively and fast.” • I once watched a man drop a $50 bill and didn’t say anything. I picked it up and used it to buy sushi. Then I posted, “good things happen when you least expect it.” Continued: To those I’ve hurt: I see you. I hear you.
