Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key

Its been almost one full year since I started Atelier with Ryza 1... I blasted through Ryza 2 shortly after and I completed both games in January of this year. I started Ryza 3, but...

Its what made me fall in love with these characters, and Ryza herself most especially.

And just like with the previous two games, its a beautifully simple message for a game-- for a trilogy with so much heart.

Bye-bye, Atelier Ryza.

10/10, one of my all time favs

Atelier Ryza as a series is about learning to love living. Not in the sense that combats nihilism, but in the sense that you learn to love the little things in life. The small, beautiful moments between friends and family. The memories and human emotions left behind.

And in this journey where Ryza discovers the dark past of the alchemists before her, in seeing their selfish legacy for herself, she finds what it is she wants to do with her life.

To leave behind a better legacy, one that's honest, one that values ordinary life.

About the things that connect you to your past and your responsibility to carry it forward into the future.

Atelier Ryza 3 is about legacy.

Its the human emotion that lasts for an eternity, that connects the past to the future.

...Ryza herself didn't really have one just yet. In Ryza 1 she's left behind as her friends leave and broaden their horizons. In Ryza 2 she returns home after leaving it for the first time in her life.

And in Ryza 3? This game is about finding what it is you live for.
November 20, 2025 at 4:36 AM
...you know it.

Ryza 2 is about the ties that bind, the bonds you make in your life withstanding the test of time and distance from one another. About the growing pains of adulthood, the departures and reunions.

But for as much as Ryza's friends settled on their path in life...

...you get to live in this world in a large interconnected map that lets you just go off and do whatever. It lets you have those little adventures that kicked started Ryza's own journey into adulthood.

Ryza 1 is a game about following your dreams, about how you grow up before...

I bring this up, about how Ryza sat with me throughout the year because this game is in so many ways the ultimate Atelier Ryza game. There's so many new mechanics, the party goes up to 11 total members (14 if we count the bonus DX characters), and for the first time...
November 20, 2025 at 4:36 AM
...Ryza was a story that was still ongoing for me, I still had more to do and more to explore. I had another adventure on the horizon with her and her friends. And now with the DX release, I felt there was no better time to come back and close the chapter on this story.
November 20, 2025 at 4:36 AM
...ended up putting it down partially because I was burned out (these games are like 40-50 hours a piece lol), but also because part of me felt like I needed some distance from those previous two games for this one. And I'm happy I did, because for the majority of 2025...

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout (Replay)

Replayed the newly released DX version, which gave this game a nice glow up (60fps and higher res). The new content is good, and yeah I still love this game & Ryza with all my heart.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - Season 2

Production is slightly weaker this season but still great overall. Love the Squad Zero additions, but yeah this is probably the weakest section of the arc for me, but the anime does elevate it some.

Fairy Tail (2020 game)

Honestly way better than it has any right to be, and I greatly appreciate it being an RPG take rather than a dime a dozen arena fighter.
This game felt like a game made by fans for fans. Just don't treat this game as a replacement for these arcs.

Bleach: Thousand Year-Blood War - Season 1

Absolute stunning adaptation of this arc's opening act. While I wish it went further in elevating certain moments from the manga, I think its largely just magnificent and the little additions so far do add to the larger story.

Burn the Witch

Fun work with some interesting lore bits sprinkled throughout. Unfortunately the story isn't quite long enough for me to call great, but I did really enjoy what is here. Hope Kubo continues it one day, I would love to read more.

Bleach

An imperfectly perfect series, with the most thematic richness of the Big Three in my eyes. Ichigo and Yhwach are both cemented as all timers for me, and Kubo's art work and paneling are magnificent, and some of the best in the medium.

Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba: Gaiden

Really liked both of these works and how they cut through to the heart of these respective characters, even Mitsuri which was a nice surprise. Highly recommend for fans who love these characters.

Ghost of Yōtei

Tsushima for me was a great, but deeply flawed experience, but this game I think is largely more refined across the board. Its story hits me emotionally harder than Tsushima ever did. Atsu's journey into finding something worth living for is beautiful.

Peacemaker Season 2

I think to describe this season in a single sentence would be "Too many ideas, not enough runtime, and not enough focus on the ideas that matter most to this story trying to be told."

Honestly like 2 or 3 of the storylines here should have been cut and...

...intentional or not.

I like Chris' overall arc on paper, but yeah way too much distractions and noise in the periphery that took away from it and made this season not land as hard as Season 1 did. Just a very messy season overall.

...saved for other projects or later seasons. Like the Nazi Earth thing, or Rick Flag Sr. doing his bullshit. I'm also not a fan of hinging the final thing Chris needs to be happy again on a woman validating his feelings... that felt a bit toxic and I can't tell if that was...
