My first thought when I saw this was, "New Handmaiden of the Lady for Old World Bretonnians just dropped."

#UndeadOctober movie 29: The Lost Boys (1987). A relocated family discovers a town’s dark secret. The quintessential 80s vampire movie, with its distinctive streetpunk vampires and a great mix of horror, action, and comedy. Well shot, too. Also, it has the best ending line of all time, hands down.

#UndeadOctober movie 28: Ghost Story (1981). Four old men are haunted by their past. It’s a good vengeful ghost story, and while there’s a couple of uneven elements, it uses everything it puts down. There’s also some good ghost effects, jump scares, and the matter-of-fact nudity you don’t get today.

#UndeadOctober movie 27: Zombieland (2009). Four survivors take a road trip across a zombie-infested America. The zombie designs are solid, and the theme of trust and found family works well. Suitably funny, too, and with perhaps the best cameo in all of zombie films. An enjoyable romp all around.

If I had a nickel for every time a goofy mid sci-fi movie was elevated to cult status by having a soundtrack by Queen, I’d have two nickels… which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

#UndeadOctober movie 26: Sinners (2025). Vampires attack a Black club in 1930s Mississippi. A film that is equal parts period piece, commentary, and horror film, and does all of them beautifully. Words do not do this film justice. Also, it has possibly the most satisfying ending ever. Excellent.

#UndeadOctober movie 25: Ghostbusters (1984). Paranormal exterminators deal with NYC’s ghost problem. It’s possibly the best supernatural comedy of all time. The writing and acting are solid, and while the effects are a bit dated in parts, the ghost designs are still fantastic and hold up very well.

#UndeadOctober movie 24: Day of the Dead (1985). Scientists and soldiers clash in an underground zombie refuge. It’s a classic, and while the characters are thin and the acting is amateur, the plot is solid and the gore is fantastic. Also, no sarcasm - the character with the best arc is a zombie.

#UndeadOctober movie 23: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014). A skateboarding vampire stalks the streets of Bad City. Don't let the black-and-white footage, deliberate pace, sparse dialogue, and subtitles put you off from this movie. It's a solid vampire film with romance and tragedy thrown in.

#UndeadOctober movie 22: The Innkeepers (2011). Hotel workers experience a haunted inn’s last weekend. This movie exists solely to waste time. There’s no narrative arc, the action of the last few minutes comes from nowhere, there’s wasted character bits, and worst - no tension build at all. Skip it.

#UndeadOctober movie 21: Cockneys vs. Zombies (2012). A family of Eastenders face a zombie apocalypse. It’s like if Temu Guy Ritchie made a version of Shaun of the Dead. Is it good? Maybe not, but it’s not bad, and importantly, it’s fun. Decent gore effects, decent laughs, and the best chase ever.

#UndeadOctober movie 20: Nosferatu (2024). A remake of an off-brand Dracula. This movie is excellent. Not a shot is wasted, and every single one is framed, lit, and acted beautifully. It’s gothic, darkly sexual, and grotesque. Not just a great vampire film, but a great film in its own right.

#UndeadOctober movie 19: Kwaidan (1964). An anthology of 4 classic Japanese ghost stories. The pace is slow and deliberate, and the sets are artificial like a stage play, so it might not suit everyone, but the tales are dark and eerie, and the directing is wonderful. Just set aside 3 hours for it.

I’m just spitballing here, but if he’s a millionaire, he can probably do better than zero thousand dollars.

#UndeadOctober movie 18: Warm Bodies (2013). A zombie falls in love with a survivor. A post-zombie-apocalypse take on Romeo and Juliet, it’s a surprisingly human movie, and while it’s not the most horrific film in our watch list, it has the most heart, and more than a little bit of brains too.

#UndeadOctober movie 17: From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) A pair of crooks take their hostages to the worst strip club ever. It starts as a gritty crime story, and then does a hard shift into a grindhouse vampire cartoon. It’s joyfully over the top, but the moments of tonal whiplash can be jarring.

#UndeadOctober movie 16: House (1977). A girl invites six friends to her mysterious aunt’s house. A combination of classic Japanese ghost stories and modern movies, this is surreal, sometimes cartoonish, fantastical, and twisted. Almost like Junji Ito dropped acid and made a movie in the 70s.

#UndeadOctober movie 15: Twins of Evil (1971). A pair of orphaned twins move to a town where the local noble is a vampire. This Hammer film has overzealous witch hunters, evil vampires, and just enough gore and nudity to keep things pulpy but not gratuitous. A little hokey at times, but still good.

#UndeadOctober movie 14: Return of the Living Dead (1985). A chemical leak causes the hungry dead to rise. What starts off as a comedy of errors with broad caricatures and silly moments turns very dark and bleak. Clever zombies are even scarier than fast ones, and these are both. It’s peak 80s pulp.

#UndeadOctober movie 13: The Changeling (1980). A widower discovers the dark secret behind his new haunted home. One part ghost story, one part murder mystery, and all crafted in that late 70s cinema style we don’t get anymore. The pace is steady, and it has good tension without using jump scares.

#UndeadOctober movie 12: Dawn of the Dead (2004). A group of random people try to survive a zombie apocalypse in a mall. The movie that gave us fast zombies is well-written thanks to James Gunn, and is packed with both action and trauma. Very bleak, even without the commentary of the original.

#UndeadOctober movie 11: What We Do in the Shadows (2014). A documentary crew follows a group of vampires in New Zealand. One of the great mockumentaries of all time, with great comic writing, timing, and acting. The TV sequel is great, but it wouldn’t be here without the original, and it’s a joy.

#UndeadOctober movie 10: Crimson Peak (2015). A new bride learns the dark secrets of her new decrepit home. It’s gothic romantic horror by way of Guillermo del Toro, and it never disappoints. Beautiful to look at, well-paced, well-acted, brutal at points, and with great del Toro monster designs too!

#UndeadOctober movie 9: Interview with the Vampire (1994). A 200-year old vampire tells his unlife story. A fantastic cast that should not work but absolutely does, thanks to great writing, directing, and acting. Probably one of the best historic vampire films, and it still holds up 30 years later.
