hah i bet that exact thing has happened to lots of people. Personally i've gotten a Geodude in my first ever pokemon playthrough! where i didn't know ehat shinies were so i asked my friend who owned the game and he told me how rare it was. The other was an Amoongus in sword's dlc!

i personally wouldn't call it ugly, i'd say it's just very mediocre
