Because the NDP does the ground work of actually advocating for progressive positions, then once they gain sufficient popularity the Liberal party adopts them. Our environment is also different in that the Liberals FREQUENTLY need NDP votes for a majority.

As another Canadian, you're taking the wrong lesson from the Liberals' success. They succeed because every time a progressive idea gets popular the Liberals adopt it. If that was applied to the US (which is a totally different environment), Dems should take popular progressive positions. They don't.
