I find them charming if simply for how deep they can be if you choose to delve in. Being able to fully customize the ship has led to some pretty awesome creations! But you can also just do the required runs until you get the warp block if it doesn't appeal to you so it's best of both worlds imo.

I suffer when the entirety of Let It Go plays out but a few flaws in an otherwise amazing experience don't stop me from loving it.

I have to say, the music and atmosphere of the moonlight butterfly in DS1 still gets me everytime.

If you haven't tried Pacific Drive, I'd give it a big reccomendo

Idk if you're strictly speaking video games but Call of Cthulhu tabletop rpg definitely has this feeling. You're character can learn spells and collect eldritch artifacts but their sanity takes the toll of the newfound power. By the time you have a wizard, they'll be batshit crazy haha

Does that mean they're following Ian?
