Healthcare professionals against the Compassionate Intervention Act (Bill 53) in Alberta. Committed to providing education, support, and resources so we can better care for patients, each other, and community.
Claim #5: "The Alberta model works." Does it, though?

Claim #1: "Most people in active addiction don't want treatment." Many PWUD have accessed or tried to access treatment, and 49% of Alberta PWUD in a recent survey would accept it if offered tomorrow. Sadly, access barriers, judgment, and ineffective treatments are common along the way.

We've been kind of busy this summer doing unpaid overtime work to protect disabled patients from Dani's latest structural violence. (Cutting income -> eviction -> manufactured excuse to lock ppl up...) It's been quiet here as a result, but we have LOTS to say. Stay tuned.

Grieving families know that forcing people into treatment is the opposite of compassion. Stop the Harm. No to coerced care! #ioad @momsstoptheharm.bsky.social

This is a laughable consent process. Patients, including those with full capacity, will be asked if they consent, but then they can't refuse??? Just one of many concerns about Bill 53. Educate yourself. Educate others. Advocate for better.

One lawyer reviews an online application... That's all it takes to apprehend and hold someone for 72 hours??? Dangerous and unjust. People will absolutely end up in the emergency department in complex withdrawal.

Healthcare workers play a key role in shaping health policy. This bill not only harms people who use drugs; it directly impacts healthcare workers across the province and threatens our ability to provide safe care and maintain trusted relationships.

Treatment doesn't need to be forced - it just needs to be better! These are some of the common reasons people get turned away when they actively ask for help.

Alberta's Bill 53, or the Compassionate Intervention Act, will cause irreparable harm to trust in the healthcare system for people who use drugs.
