I think it’s fair that it takes a full day or two to simulate that many safety situations. Four hours isn’t that much time. But yeah, they should try harder to minimize the impact. Especially after line 2 is open, closing this much of the system can’t be a yearly occurrence.

That’s what makes AT Proto unique, and it’s a very interesting take on the problem. Yeah, it’s unproven, but it’s certainly worth exploring.

Self hosting is only part of the equation! The goal isn’t to have a self-hosted, isolated experience using the same data format. The goal is to have a shared distributed system with features that circumvent bad actors. (E.g. complete control over the microservices, like algorithms.)

For example, if Bluesky injects ads into people’s feeds, a different compliant client can be used. If they censor (or promote) certain types of content, other algorithms and moderation lists can be used. So the distributed system itself fights against even big players doing bad things.

IMO, that’s the interesting part of Bluesky. Instead of isolated self-hosted servers, it’s a distributed system that lots of people can contribute to. In theory, this prevents a centralized company from doing huge amounts of harm to the platform, so long as the protocol standards are respected.
