the code path that failed was never exercised during this rollout due to needing a policy change that would trigger the code. As a safety precaution, this code change came with a red-button to turn off that particular policy serving path. The issue with this change was that it did not have appropriate error handling nor was it feature flag protected. Without the appropriate error handling, the null pointer caused the binary to crash.

The most popular #testing post I had on twitter was this whiteboard drawing I did at 4am.
The test pyramid reimagined as a bug filter. Infinite set of possible known bugs. Any bug can enter the filter at the Unit Test level. Only bugs not reducible by unit tests reach the integration test level. Only bugs irreducible by unit or integration tests reach the e2e (end to end) test level. Only the most subtle bugs are left to find in at manual testing level. Only functionally undetectable bugs make it to production.
