Postdoc in synthetic biology in Johan Paulsson's lab at HMS SysBio. Trying to understanding feedback circuits in living cells by building them.
This paper argued a branch of cephalopods traded genome plasticity for the ability to edit their mRNA. This branch also happens to be the smart cephalopods! They don't go as far as saying the trade-off is what made them smart, but it is definitely implied.

At least in E coli, the terminators in this paper are the best I've found anywhere and have made a pretty massive difference in read through over even other synthetic terminators.
