It's funny... I've been going the self-pub route for years now, but for a variety of reasons with my latest novel decided to try trad pub again, find an agent and hopefully a decent publisher. I knew rejection would be on the table, but forgot just HOW MUCH I have to look forward to... sigh...

It's a very raw feeling drawing, so everything you mentioned about the shadows actually work in its favor. But then I'm barely a cartoonist and definitely not an artist ;)
