Only because it takes a while to build military-industrial sovereignty. Perhaps 10 years. That’s a very dangerous decade if the US disengages. It’s the same with rare earths. Go cold turkey and you may not survive

If the primary goal is to keep Trump engaged in Europe, you do what you have to do in the moment, I would say. This strategy has succeeded so far. Spain, sitting a safe distance from Russia, can afford to float alternate proposals. It’s a reflection of Sanchez’s domestic weakness & lack of courage

I’m sympathetic to his line on Gaza. There is a lot of hypocrisy in other European capitals. On China he has been horrible. And the refusal to sign up to the 5% NATO goal - no matter how unrealistic it is - was a devastating signal at a time when EU partners face very real risks from Russia

Realistic is one way to describe it. But I can think of some other adjectives for Sanchez’s foreign policy. Among them: cynical, defeatist, opportunistic
