David: I wanted to see something like the Princess Bride that’s just about pure love. I remember seeing that when I was a little kid with my mom and being like “that’s the shape of love” and for a little kid to be able to see that with [Ed & Stede] and be like “oh that’s the shape of love” is nice.

David: He said “Ohhh the show is about love” and it was just a really lovely email to receive.
And then when you know the trick of the thing you’re making, you’re kind of like “yeah it’s obvious it’s about love! They’re in love with each other.” Even watching the fan response where it was like “are they…is that a thing?” It’s like YEAH THEY’RE A THING THEY’RE GONNA KISS GUYS IT’S A THING.
But then the thing that I took for granted is that you know I’m “ostensibly straight”, whatever that means. So every time I see a romance, that’s me up there. Because that’s what gets made. And I thought them kissing - people would just be like “oh yeah that’s fine they kissed!” I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal…and looking back I’m like, “yeah dude it is a fucking big deal” and I don’t know that. I see myself represented all the time.
So to me in hindsight, it was like I wanted to see something like the Princess Bride that’s just about pure love.
