Thing is, comedy lives in the wide shot, especially in the Marx Bros. time. The performance was key, you couldn't edit around it.

I know you know this, but: with single cam, performance is de-emphasized in favor of editing. Not saying it's better or worse, just whose talent you're leaning on, the actor or the editor. The director is, hopefully, involved in both.
