Did you know this is the world’s longest suspension bridge. It is spanning dardanelles in Turkey. We crossed the hellespont over it back in 2023, a year after it was built- the first bridge here, i think, since Xerxes’ pontoon bridges.

Sound by friction (stridulation) ! Spiny lobsters have lost the large claws (chelae) of true lobsters. Instead, they rely on long antennae for defense and sensing. When the antennae move, a pad-like plectrum at the base rubs against a ridged file on the head producing a scary underwater sound!

For more than a decade I have passed by this carving on the walls of the HMS Quad nearly every day. It is a reminder that science and medicine take time. Opportunities are fleeting, experiments are risky, judgments are difficult. Despite all of it, we commit ourselves to this endless pursuit.

How amazing that this document from Hellenistic Alexandria can be accessed online! The Berlin Papyrus 13044r (recto side) with the “Laterculi Alexandrini”: a fascinating catalog that includes
a “Who’s Who” of the Ancient World; the “Seven Wonders”; and a list of islands, mountains, rivers and lakes.

What an impressively rich, multilayered, and scientifically engaging book ! As we say in Turkish, ‘I finished it in a single breath, before I allowed myself to take another one’. Each story more intriguing than the last, making you reflect on our very human experiences and how our brains are wired.
