I too loved this podcast, and have recommended it to people. But I have one beef with it. McBride continues to talk about using "perfect language." Even that framing is condescending to those who use different, "imperfect" language. Better just to say, I prefer to use these terms...

If we survive this moment, the lessons learned have to include being much better about keeping key cultural institutions open for a range of political views to be expressed. We need a deep recommitment to LIBERAL principles, not "progressive" ones.

It is that the left looks down on them and seeks to cleanse them from the halls of cultural power. And as cancel culture on the left grew, so did this feeling.

I do NOT mean to endorse their view. I think it reflects a kind of paranoia. There were no detention camps for the right; there were no black helicopters. But there was a germ of truth in their paranoia. There almost always is.

In sum, they feel like this is merely turnabout, which is, of course, fair play.

feel like they were subject to the same. There were worried that Biden was going to set up detention camps for them, so they're ready to set them up. They were worried that Obama was going to send in the black helicopters for them, so they're ready to roll out the unmarked cars.
