MINNESOTA Minnesota heard the whispering of years, The dreams that sent men wandering, and far; It knew the rugged tread of pioneers Who felt the bright lure of the western star. Unfolding like an answer to their prayer, Here flowed a stream that, struggling toward its goal, Gained strength, though rapids spread a foaming snare, And reached its haven, beyond tide and shoal. MOONRISE OVER SUPERIOR Only quiet starlight showed Cars bordered on the lake-shore road. For each one, as it parked, would close Its headlight eyes and seem to doze Until the moon's thin edge would pull A tide of homage. To the full, The watchers saw it grow and make, Across the dark terrain of lake, A gold path for a heaven-set tiller.
