This week I realised what this dream had been about - the chance to inspire the Emergency Physicians of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) at #DGINA2025. The thing is, when you sit down to try to inspire people about what you do - the vocation, not just the work - something incredible happens.

It used to be possible to use Twitter questions with a conference hashtag to avoid the inevitable Captain Question… www.stemlynsblog.org/captain-ques...
The Captain Question algorithm takes a humorous look at all the ways people at conferences use speaker question time to ask things that aren’t questions - and encourages them to resist! It has been shared multiple times across social media and was originally decided by Prof Simon Carley of the St Emlyns blog.

Helpfully, the trainees have actually given us some concrete suggestions of things that we can do to improve the support offered (images from paper). I’ll be thinking about how we can implement them in my workplaces. #FOAMed #MedSky
Care of individuals • Proximal debrief and offer of cover for trainee • Assessment of likelihood of second victim effect and TRiM referral if avaliable • Screening for further help as needed e.g. counselling via professional support service Support from event to conclusion of investigation • Individual assigned to support trainee thoroughout • Sensitivity around written communication • Offer of avaliable proformas for statement writing • Trainee to be included in post event communication, including M&M • Specific support for the coroner's court including offer of presence of supporter on day Pre-emptive training • 'Something awful has happened' checklist of recommended immediate actions • Communication within departments - open and supportive culture around patient safety incidents • Generic teaching for anaesthetic trainees on the process of a patient safety investigation
