I used to teach Conde to my hs students--Crossing the Mangrove--and I really dug the world building of the whole community, the extended symbolism of the mangrove swamp, and the novel as a whole.

Checked into a hotel in NOLA and on my wall was “Keep Your Face Always Towards the Sunshine, and the Shadows Will Fall Behind You” attributed to Walt Whitman. “There’s no way that’s Whitman,” I thought. Turns out it’s from a 20th century person (among others) named M.B. Whitman.

Didn't they announce that the Board unanimously approved the new name?

You accept Weiss's begging the question that they didn't try hard enough to get comments from the administration? Are you basing your acceptance of her claim on anything independent of her memo? Or just accepting it at face value when others have pointed out her absence throughout the process?

There's only one rationale for Republicans in Congress to support him at this point, and it's access to power. It's not principles (I don't think it ever was), but this message clearly calls for vigilante justice, and of course the Speaker will not have heard anything about it.

You have really achieved quite a ratio there.

You don’t think research, encyclopedias, and other similar sources are edited and reviewed? I might be a Luddite, but all the horror stories I hear about LLMs failure rates make me quite distrustful. Their beguiling ease of use and rapidity is very attractive, though.

Because it’s been edited and fact-checked.

A thing about English class is it’s much less about content (in hs) than most subjects. I loved teaching Of Mice and Men, but it’s not great on race/women, so I can teach the same skills with another book, like Kindred.

I loved it as a teen in the 80s.

You should want everyone else on bikes and public transport. It would make your life so great.

One difference is how universal any trend is now. I’m oddly siced about localized slang from growing up in DC, you triflin’ bamma.

In the 80s, in high school, we would go to a sports store in DC. My friend was a Bucs fan. He wanted some gear and the guy working there mocked him. My friend said, “Hey, they went to the NFC championship game in 79! The guy said, “How? In the stands?”

My son is 12 and is interested in a book series. He says no sports! He recently really liked Apothecary.

His “Aubade” is paralyzingly sad.

But I like it because it is bitter and because it is my heart.

Once when one of my young children pissed me off, I wrote this:
They fuck you up, your little kids.
They make you question all you do.
They fight you when you’re being kind,
Add crushing comments from the blue.

Etc.

@cmzparker5.bsky.social once again, this alarm is going off. It warns that HVAC is flooded, and it happens after rains. Can it not be fixed? Thanks!
