If a person is on an HMO here in the United States, they don’t get a choice; the person has to get a referral from their PCP. Even with a PPO plan, a person’s choice of specialist may still require a referral from their PCP. For many, there is no unfettered access here.

Good question that people much smarter than I could answer. But waiting for a perfect solution will do much more harm than good.

Breaking up insurers is a good option to start with, in theory. With more options comes more confusion on the part of the consumer. I learned of a new plan for seniors that has amazing price point. One catch - no affiliated hospitals. Seniors were so confused and upset when they learned the truth.

Rather than posting questions here, start a conversation with other countries who can better provide insight on how they tackle problems. Appropriately tax wealthier individuals and corporations so such monies might be spent on UHC. Rather than be a multibillionaire, $900 million should be ok.

There are competent models of UHC in other countries such as Japan that could be used as a model for the US. If we as a country are already paying much higher rates of healthcare per person, cost should not be the issue. A greater focus on prevention, quality and access are needed.
