*meant to add "In my experience." It's the thing I notice the most when I accidentally slip into Southern Mode and try fake politeness to NYers: they regard me with deep suspicion.

Try that with the average New Yorker and they'll stare at you like you're a threat -- because fake happiness feels like that to a lot of people. Maybe you need it for some reason, but I'd rather see something truthful. Like actual happiness, from workers who've been treated well.
