At the same time, Maradona was somewhat of a dented genius, a superstar whose journey from the slums to the stratosphere had veered off course. But he was available on the transfer market, and Napoli were desperate to sign him.

In 1984, Napoli was a poor club in a poor city in a poor region. All three were looked down on and viewed with hostility by many in northern Italy. As the de facto capital of southern Italy, Naples bore the brunt of the hostility, contempt, and racism that swirled around the “southern question”.

It’s important to note that there’s more to Napoli than Maradona, and there’s more to Maradona than Napoli. But you can’t tell the story of the club or the man without the other.

Thanks, Gareth! I've actually found Spurs to be one of the more interesting clubs of the 80s from my research, especially them being the first English club to float on the stock market in 83 and the commercial push that led to the Premier League.
