This year #bluewhales have been scarce off San Diego’s coast. #Dolphins, however, are here in abundance. Here’s a long-beaked dolphin pod I saw yesterday with #Gonewhalewatching. Saw three pods like this with 4 different species. Enjoy my haphazard, creative video angling.

My guess is that a lot has to do with the similarity between the “bad” animal and the “good” animal. It probably strikes people as weird to kill a ton of owls to…save owls. Also, this debate may come at a moment when attitudes are changing. From the PNAS piece:

Hard to square canceling grants related to investigating forever chemicals with the MAHA movement & admin’s professed interest in a baby boom (reported in another NYT article today, in which the admin expressly called out environmental toxins as critical to plans to boost reproductive health).
