But because Java has a humongous usage base they cannot do drastic re-design of the OOPsiness of the language. That's just being pragmatic and empathetic to their users IMO.

From all the blogs and talks from the Java core team in the last few years, I don't get the impression they are OOP fanatics.... In fact they are trying to make the language multi paradigm FP, Data oriented programming etc.
