also i remember when i was a kid and i saw spelling bees in cartoons and such and as a speaker of a highly phonetic language i was like "how can they have spelling bees? don't they all know how to write their own language?" because that could never be a thing here 😅

you're right! and the lessons for your native language are always different and not like grammar-oriented etc as they are in foreign language classes so maybe it just doesn't come up? i'm so confused when people confuse there, their and they're shouldn't it be the clearest thing for a native 😭

overall it's just weird how often i feel like i spell words better than native speakers!!

no but really as a non-native english speaker i find it fascinating how many native english speakers seem to spell words in such interesting ways?? i don't mean you have to be perfect there can be dyslexia and everything but BALLBALLS and century is such a common word you've surely seen in school
