My boss, after telling her I work better when I feel trusted because I don’t want to let someone down when they believe in me – rather than being watched under a microscope.

2. Never go to in-person meetings first and wait til another team member is ready to walk with you to her office with you.

3. Turn around and go back to your desk if you see she is going to the bathroom at the same time as you. Hold your pee until it’s safe to go.

Stuff like this really makes me feel like middle managers are useless lol. Sorry about your experience though.

I literally tried explaining this to her, but she always has these corporate spiels about “finding a balance” between our preferences… which mostly means me compromising.
January 8, 2025 at 12:26 AM
For real! I’m actively applying as we speak.

It was a struggle & took lots of conflict, but it’s a bit better because she finally agreed to fully embrace project management software.

There’s still a lot of growing pains though. She’s just not a nice person & believes in toxic productivity.

What a hall monitor. She must be fun at parties.

Like… why can’t it be both getting the day off & having access to mail-in ballots?

This is so her: a college-educated, “progressive” white woman, treating people like they’ve already disappointed her & believing the worst in humanity.

So what if some don’t vote? We should still make it accessible.

I told her these notes wouldn’t make sense as quick bullet points since I’d need to be thoughtful $ include screenshots to make sure she gets it this time.

The question is… why didn’t you fkn take notes when I trained you?!

I am busy screensharing while I train you. I’m not your secretary! UGH.
January 7, 2025 at 5:57 PM
I don’t mind retraining someone, but the way she told me to train her (told, NOT asked), was so entitled.

She also straight up said that training and writing notes wouldn’t take long. She always thinks shouldn’t take long to do to imply I still have time to be productive in other areas.
January 7, 2025 at 5:57 PM
All the things she needed help with were addressed when I trained her, which even included things I picked up on my own along the way (& weren’t in my training).

I mention this to her in a subtle way, so she wants a 2nd training to refresh—but this time she suggests I ALSO take notes for her.
January 7, 2025 at 5:57 PM
Fast forward: I prepared an agenda & trained her.

Throughout the year—during the handful of times she has to do hands-on work—she asks me to go in & fix campaigns she started…
January 7, 2025 at 5:57 PM
We’re a small nonprofit, so while I do most of the hands-on work, she does sometimes too when things are super busy.

I asked her if she wants to join the training too (it was 2 days of training that lasted 3 hours each).

She said no; she’s too busy, & I can just train her after I get trained.

At some point, you just need to hire more people. But nonprofits hate spending individual contributor salaries.

Anyway… welcome back to work!
January 7, 2025 at 5:39 PM
I once told her it’s not possible to work at max productivity everyday. It leads to burn out.

Since our busy season started in October & just ended on Christmas Eve, I’ve been working at max speed for quite a bit.

Plus, the constant need for updates creates more work.

No wonder I’m miserable.
January 7, 2025 at 5:39 PM
“Every minute counts,” is something she’s been saying to me more often lately.

I understood it leading up to the December holidays - because that’s the busiest time of year for nonprofit fundraising.

But she said it to me again on the first Monday back at work after the long break.
January 7, 2025 at 5:39 PM
I work in a high-production role, and because I have ADHD hyperfocus, I see these random anxiety-ridden (on her end) requests for updates that usually aren’t just quick response-worry as an interruption that’s hard to bounce back from.
January 7, 2025 at 5:39 PM
If she asks first, she feels like she’s being forced to micromanage.

She told me all jobs include “managing up” a little.

But I prefer protocols to be explicitly said and baked in to our process (rather than me guessing).

I like using project management apps to include progress update tasks.
