I’d sooner kick over a kid’s sand-castle than disturb the lovely foam on my latte. What am I to do?

The indomitable 孫凱琳 delivers a knockout for the 春美歌劇團. From the stage at Kaohsiung’s tiny 九天堂

It’s never too early to start drilling your tot on the basics of aerial stage combat.

From Tainan’s lively 水錦歌劇團, up north for a short stint at Bali’s 安福宮.

I return to Taipei next week for 2+ months and am simply overwhelmed by the number and quality of outdoor temple-fair opera offerings for the first part of October. And on the weekends there are shows in the indoor theaters. It’s bonkers!

It’s always a special day when someone from the Sinosphere’s theatre world discovers Zeffirelli’s “Turandot” production for the first time and are gobsmacked by the production’s sheer idiocy.

Dear diary: today my dental hygienist was particularly keen on giving me an introductory lesson on (Southern) Vietnamese.

For reasons I can no longer remember (jet lag?), I apparently thought it was a good idea to do this entire interview holding my hands behind my back.

I look like I’ve been handcuffed.

I would not call myself Johann Adolph Hasse’s #1 fan, but this recitative from Piramo e Tisbe (1768), sung by a cruel father and accompanied by bare, chromatically-rising octaves, is positively hair-rising.

And I don’t even have that much hair left!

It’s that time of day when half of Taiwan hops onto social media to type in all caps:

I’ll be damned - the old “sprinkle your musty books with baking soda and throw them in the freezer for a week” trick really does seem to work.

Unlike Norman Lebrecht, Taruskin never had a book pulped after losing a defamation case.

At an event for Taiwanese democracy activist, politician, and novelist 姚嘉文, and I was just handed this (unrelated) book. I am afraid to look inside.

Maybe I’ll open it up during a stay in one Taiwan’s Talmud hotels, as is the custom of my people.

The 戲曲 scholars used to be the cool kids in town, knocking back tea with mobsters, hitting the Bund and going to the best parties (ahem, I mean conferences). Then came the 文和大革命 and we all had to burn our stuff and go into seclusion. Still, on the evidence this new book, we’re not yet dead yet.
