We're are losing contacts and work opportunities by withdrawing from Instagram, but it's not worth it to stay. We would rather succeed or fail on our own terms, rather than compromise our ethics along the way.

The whole system is designed to create an addiction based on hatred and to make people buy things they don't need.

Whatever positive impact we might have been able to make on Instagram is just not worth it. The famous "N*zi bar" story comes to mind.

Every post on Instagram et al is free labor you are doing for Meta, all in exchange for the privilege of watching ads, receiving misinformation, and being exposed to an algorithm designed to make you angry so that you spend more time arguing with people ... and watching more ads.

We are done.

We are leaving Instagram for good and we won't be using any Meta products.

It was a surprisingly easy decision, since with the recent changes at Meta, there is no other ethical option.

In a world that sanitizes non-normative people or presents them as tragic, grotesque, miserable or ridiculous, we want to show queer characters living their lives outside the norm, defining happiness on their own terms, surviving and aging.

For us, growing up queer meant not finding representation in media. We only could see ourselves in villains and monsters, shameful stereotypes or side characters who die in terrible ways. And, more recently, in characters whose main aspiration is to be considered "normal", to fit in, to assimilate.

Because our lives are not a bottomless pit of misery and neither are they an endless succession of parties.

Nor a "gay" version of "normal".

Our lives are all of that and none of that and much more.

Our lives are diverse.

We want to portray queerness with all its nuances, without falling into cliches, sensationalism, or the recent "normalizing" impulse. We address the challenges we face as queer people without losing our sense of humor or our desire to transgress and transform.
