At the end of my recent contract in Antarctica we passed the
@seashepherdglobal.bsky.social Allankay in Ushuaia.

They've just released their first dispatch from the Antarctic Peninsula. An up-close look at the complex matter of krill fisheries in Antarctica.

The land shuddered a little beneath us the other night: a reminder of the dynamism of our planet, even here atop our stable ole Australian plate.

Earthquakes may seem rare in the Blue Mountains, but apparently they occur almost every year!

Why thank you assorted but rather homogenous law-type people.

It is a distinct pleasure and indeed a privilege to find myself in such distinguished company.

"cultural mediators—writers of articles magazines [etc.]—help the consumer choose, appropriately interpret, and use the touristic experiences to social (status) ends."
(Britton, 1989).

Incisive, sharp like a 🔪

I'm awake! This is the most enlivening article I've read in a while 🤭

As someone who often works in tourism, I love this fiercely unambiguous assertion (Britton, 1989) 😝 🩵

"the tourist experience itself . . . is typically neither authentic, nor is it capable of fulfilling the promises of promotional material, nor does it meet the expectations of tourists".

ASOC represents the global environmental community in Antarctic decision-making fora.

A current area of focus is improving protection for emperor penguins facing reduced sea ice and habitat loss.

This sunset started long before the evening meal and ended hours later, hours upon hours on deck watching the light shift, the ship slowly trailing a pod of orca as they sliced easily through the rosy sea.

I miss this place.

Meanwhile, on the Antarctic Peninsula . . . guiding friends report some of the best weather in years.

I wonder whether it is linked to the El Niño Southern Oscillation switch.

There seems to be a correlation between El Niño years in Aus and fine weather on the Peninsula.

I've been looking at PhDs in Australia, the U.K, the U.S and Canada.

Surprised by the vastly different approaches to the first two years, and the relative duration.

Does anyone have any thoughts or reflections on the differences, or pros and cons of either?

Thank you!🙏

There's been an interesting constellation of things at the nexus of Antarctic science, policy and research recently.

Wondering what this may come to mean for Antarctica, our continent of 'peace and science' . . .

In Inuit Nunangat I learned a little about the complexity of Inuit spirituality.

Informed by reverence for and fear of the ice, ocean and life, spirituality is steeped in place and can embrace elements of shamanism, polytheism, animism and Christianity.

How can we build resilient societies able to withstand the pressures of more frequent water shortages, floods, fires and food security issues?

New research suggests that one way is to focus on reducing inequality and political polarization.

MS Fram has arrived at Half Moon Island in the South Shetlands while the Nat Geo Explorer steams up the Beagle Channel to Ushuaia.

Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra Del Fuego, a rapidly growing port town where the majority of tourism vessels begin their journey to Antarctica.

Important news for all working in or visiting Antarctica this season.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in brown skua populations on Bird Island, South Georgia.

These are the first confirmed cases of the disease in the Antarctic region.
