Poem by Stella Browne : 'Scrapped: The Women Munition Workers of Britain, Before and After November 1918'
'You have done well: To you we owe our lives
Our soldiers’ glory, and our prosperous days.
Handmaids of Vulcan, sisters, heroes’ wives!
Our thanks shall match our praise.' 1/2

Sorreeeee! If you are covering that, maybe mention that the Women's Engineering Society was founded in 1919 as a direct result of the shameful waste of female skills. @wes1919.bsky.social @politicdormouse.bsky.social

I am looking at that and remembering the big storm of 1987 when waves were crashing onto the pierhead car park and cars were bouncing so much on their springs that all their alarms were going.
I had just arrived in Liverpool that day to start my phd.

It is worth reading novels written in and set in the immediate post-WW2 era in UK to get some vague understanding of the VERY grimly grey basic living standards of almost everyone, even in occupations we might now consider middle class. Monica Dickens 1951 book: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Turn...

2/2 Has anyone else put together a list of things our kids should be keeping a watching eye on to ensure the house doesnt fall to bits before they can inherit, in case we continue to be less-than-attentive to it?
