Addy chose April 9 as her birthday. It was the day lee surrendered at appomattox. I have not read these books since I was a kid but I know I will always remember that detail! 💖

installation features several artworks. a facsimile of a swimming pool in the middle of the floor, surrounded by astroturf. a pink pool noodle and pink swim trunks lay on the pool. on the far wall is a painting of a figure in a lawn chair. on the closer wall is a painting of two figures floating in a pool, depicted from a bird's eye view. the cenetred figure floats with the help of a pool noodle. in the background, a door made of bamboo poles is propped open, another pair of swim trunks draped over it. you can see a glimpse of another painting behind it in a separate room. another view from that same installation. a painting on the wall of a figure in a lounge chair. the ground is astroturf. half of a white gate is swung open. beyond the gate, the floor changes to packed dirt. a metal water pump is in the center of the room. a cement block wall stands behind it. only a few blocks tall. it is covered with graffiti and rebar sticks out the top. the far wall of the gallery has mismatched paint, a chainlink fence propped up against it, and two portraits partially obscured by the cement blocks.

Gallagher's work hangs on the wall. an off white canvas seemingly covered with teeth marks. As though a human bit a square of canvas, leaving blueish marks, and then the squares were all assembled together. Zooming in reveals that these are not teethmarks but teal semicircles painted with bloblike blue smiles, googly eyes, little faces in profile with their tongues sticking out. Jefferson Pinder. Mothership (Capsule). 2009.

This was on view at the blacksonian. Like all museums in the smithsonian suite, it no longer values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
A vessel in the shape of a space capsule. It is made from wood and salvaged tin. The tin is rusty in places and has designs stamped into it. The vessel is perched on it's edge, on display in a museum. Wall text from the museum. Jefferson Pinder (b. 1969) Mothership (Capsule), 2009 Wood from President Obama's inaugural platform, salvaged tin, and 22-inch chrome rim Audio: Sun Ra, Space Is the Place and Stevie Wonder, Living for the City Gift of Henry Thaggert III in Memory of Burnell P. Thaggert "We grew up when NASA was in its golden age. Remember, the first interracial kiss on television was in outer space on Star Trek. Science fiction fantasy... is, in part, a spiritual place that African Americans have always inhabited." Afrofuturist Jefferson Pinder constructed this sculpture from wood salvaged from President Obama's 2009 inaugural platform, and ceiling tin from a gutted Baltimore house-materials whose nature reflects the past and the present, the old and the new. In this vehicle, black people can be transported toward new and uncharted territory. This concept is underscored by the work's shape, a NASA space capsule, and its name, derived from musician George Clinton's stage prop the Mothership.

"In which Smith was asked to make art featuring Octavia E. Butler's archive, then asked not to show it because the film rights for Kindred were owned by someone. Smith still showed her work, with censored names and events. Now that we are on the other side of that wretched Kindred tv show, this is even more offensive." Dana's arm is stock in the wall. A black censorship box covers where her arm makes contact with the wall.

Well-worn hood from a dark hoodie. Shorn from the rest of the garment. Chopped off, roughly. Strings intact. Hangs with wires to give the appearance that an invisible head is underneath. Installed at eye-height.

Contemplating space/place in the galaxy. What lessons can be learned from our rotations and cycles and pulls? From the miracles that come out of Gee's Bend?

The majority of the quilt is black, white, brown, and grey squares and rectangles in the shape of an H. Within them are black or white circles or half circles and a few black squares.
