How academics imagine their lives would look like if they decide to work in tech

AI-plagiarism is almost impossible to detect.

What if a tool asked students quick, AI-generated MCQs based on their own submissions right after they submit an assignment? It could help check if they actually understood their work.

Would this help?

A study found that 1 in 3 top US universities have unclear AI policies.

Over 50% Unis leave it to individual instructors.

What's your classroom policy on AI? Do you permit, prohibit, or discourage AI tools?

The best Professors have 4 things in common:

1. They are passionate about their subject
2. They are all about their students.
3. They are relentless about getting better.
4. They are always positive.

Kind reminder: PLEASE DO NOT ANALYSE research data on ChatGPT.

Research data is confidential & uploading it on public AI platforms will violate university policies.

You can’t control how data is used or if it leaks into AI outputs.

Always check approved AI tools.

No job is more demanding than being a young professor.

Teaching. Research. Publishing. Admissions.

Balancing it all while raising a family, running on little sleep, and chasing endless deadlines.

Yet, you show up every day for the love of science.

Respect.

If you’re using AI to generate everything from course plans to assignments, think twice.

AI excels at being "good enough".

It can’t replace your expertise or understanding of your students.

Use AI but don't settle for 'good enough' to create a true learning experience.

Worst analogy I’ve heard: "AI is like a calculator."

Kids can rely on calculators without learning arithmetic & just turn out fine.

But kids using AI for everything?

They lose the cognitive ability to do anything novel or innovative.

It’s not the same. Not even close.

There are only 3 ways to combat the menace of AI plagiarism:

• Pen & paper in class
• In-person labs
• Post-assignment viva

Take home assignments are dead.

Earlier students would cheat and there would be a conversation.

With AI students are incentivized to resist that conversation.

A TA loved teaching intro to CS until he started grading the first 40 assignments:

• 2 were literal copy-pastes
• 1 printed "I like older women"
• Most ignored half the instructions

Do you feel the urge to call students out or do you resist it?

The smartest instructors I know:

• Are not afraid to use AI as a teaching tool
• Guide students to use AI wisely
• Design assignments that require broad thinking & go beyond AI’s generic responses

Overthinking AI won’t prepare students for the future. Using it will.

A professor I know almost cried when she found that 40% of her 2nd-year CS students couldn’t write a basic For loop.

Students're using AI to pass coding assignments without ever learning to code.

Yet, they’re on track to graduate.

Is the CS major becoming obsolete? What do you think?

Why is education the only profession where teachers are made to feel guilty for taking time off?

Even when it's unpaid?

Our teachers and staff give so much to our students every day.

What have we given back in return?
