Gradually, by 1917, the idea of a distinctly revolutionary museum began to crystallise. These initial attempts at musealising revolutionary history both predated—and influenced, not least through personnel transfers to Soviet institutions—the Soviet ‘industry’ of historical-revolutionary museums.

The trajectory of such a museum was tortuous: at first it became entangled in the late nineteenth-century museum culture and was scarcely distinguishable from the archival and library formats familiar to émigré revolutionaries, nor from the prevailing form of the national museum.
