Isn't a great reason that you get a publication regardless of the outcome?

Reduce the file drawer problem and stop someone else wasting their time and money because you wouldn't be able to publish a negative result traditionally.

I agree with the sentiment (being an ex postdoc!)

I'm worried that the main sorting mechanism they found is high impact publications. Given the conditioning to want an academic career, that can't be a good incentive.

I wish the Mail would stop banging on about Woke and let us live our lives.

But its not a very economic solution unless we can crack costs and incentive structures where more extensive retrofitting work is needed.

overall its a positive experience. We're using about 1/3 to 1/4 of the energy we used to for a warmer house. Our carbon footprint is dependent on the composition of the grid and will reduce over time. As will our electricity costs if the spark gap decreases.

what I have noticed is flow noise and the central heating pump whirring. I'm not sure if that's an issue with the install, the cost of getting a high flow heating system, or the result of us moving the pump to a more central location, due to where we've sited the hot water tank. 🤔

in terms of noise, there is more than a boiler but we can't hear it from indoors, I doubt my neighbours can either. It's going to be loudest when most people have their windows closed.
November 21, 2024 at 8:32 AM
After all, eventually everyone needs a new boiler right? So its a cost that's kind of baked in.

the £7500 grant is great, we couldn't have done it otherwise. But I think something where everyone pays about the same as a new boiler, even if it means the cheaper installs get more expensive, would help defray the costs where more extensive work was needed.
November 21, 2024 at 8:32 AM
but it was much more expensive. I think the grant structure isn't particularly helpful for older houses where more work is needed. My ideal would be a grant that brings the cost of whatever package install you need down to the cost of a new boiler.

We had quite an extensive refit getting it in, moving from 8mm microbore pipes and replacing every radiator in the house, which means heat output has been adjusted for each room. It reduces the cold spots in the house and each room is more pleasant.

The house is pretty warm and the pump is able to keep up with the challenge. We have it set at 1C warmer than we used to with our aging combi boiler and its costing us around the same per day. We're both work from home so its on all day 😬

We have a Mitsubishi Ecodan 11kW fitted to a solid wall, 1910's semi detached in the West midlands, so, midlands-south. no internal or external insulation. Weather apps tell me its -3 as I write this.

And me pls.

Definitely! Though our remit is the R&I side of HE and doesn't necessarily include teaching.
