16/ TL;DR: The UK system isn’t mysterious, it just runs differently. Tailor your cover letter to the criteria, foreground your teaching, and remember: the letter is everything.

Now with amazing colleagues at @ucl.ac.uk we are going to look at how over-/underconfidence explains gender and SES gaps in real world job application outcomes.

In related work with @adameczanna.bsky.social we show that boy twins also overestimate their math ability as compared to their girl twin and their parents and teachers do the same
