When cypress stands, wetlands & natural watersheds are stripped, drained with pumps & replaced with truckloads of foreign fill, the natural sponge is gone. Then the land is paved over with roofs, patios, driveways, roads, sidewalks and pool decks. Instead of soaking in, stormwater runs off instantly

Multiply that across dozens of sprawling acres, with thousands of elevated homes and all that water is funneled downhill into roadside ditches that empty into inland tributaries. Then downhill surges collide with incoming tides or onshore winds, tributaries stop draining. Water has nowhere to go.

So it backs up. Not onto the new, elevated developments. It floods the older, lower neighborhoods. That’s why we now see so much inland flooding in coastal communities: it’s engineered into the system by overbuilding, impervious surfaces, and the destruction of natural floodplains.
