3. All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days by Rebecca Donner. A biography of an American spy against Hitler Germany. It documents how the Weirmar republic went from a place overflowing with speech to silent. It’s about how fascist governments rise and slowly stripping rights one by one.

2. We Are Proud Boys by Andy Campbell. This is a biography of the Proud Boys, a white supremacist group instrumental in the J6 coup attempt. This is valuable not just because it shows how modern white supremacist groups form and operate, but how the silliness is a distraction for the media.

1. Culture Warlords by Talia Lavin is a deep dive into how the alt right pipeline operates. If you’ve been wondering how so many young boys have been tricked by the dumbest people alive or if you feel like there’s some hidden society you’ve been missing this will give a lot of insight

Your work is so insightful and considerate that it was honestly a breath of fresh air I needed. Not just with social media but also from academia that you turn that attention to genres that aren’t given that care. I’m so grateful for the work you produced and insights you gave

And I don’t want to romanticize TikTok to much it had a ton (TON) of problems but it sucks that instead of getting to work on them the government has essentially taken a chunk of my life from me

Remembering just how young I was (21!) when I got on TikTok and it shaped my music taste, book taste, helped me develop my masters thesis, gave me new hobbies and perspectives. That it’s not going to be here feels unreal and like just a whole chunk of my life has been removed

In the last 24 hours I went through all my saved sounds from the app and it brought up a lot. Going through and watching the Bo Burnham Inside videos again and remembering how much TikTok saved me from the pandemic as politicians were on tv saying they were fine with letting all of us die

I love the phrasing of personal stakes fantasy, that’s exactly what I was searching for from “cozy” fantasy. I don’t want the whole world to end just this persons life a little.
