My wife @dirtynerdygirly.bsky.social asked me what Randy Savage's team would be if he were a Pokemon trainer, and I took her prompt far too seriously.
Here is the result.

I find it hilarious that one of the most important creators in the history of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise happens to share names with a wrestler who would poke people in the throat with fake metal fingers.

And if El Dorado isn't already the perennial example of why studio dudes being too hands-on in the filmmaking can be such a bad thing, there's the other side of the coin:
Katzenberg pretty much never had time to make it out to the studio where another film was being made. You might've heard of it.

Katzenberg couldn't be a consistent presence for El Dorado as he had been for Prince of Egypt, but he was just as controlling despite not working as closely with the creative team. This led to a bunch of second-guessing on his part. (Excerpt from "The Men Who Would Be King" by Nicole LaPorte)

Nowadays, The Road to El Dorado is remembered fondly by a very passionate segment of millennials for its humor, Chel, animation, relationship between the protagonists, Chel, a bunch of very good memes, and Chel.
It also lost $20 million before considering advertising.

However then came the lawsuit. Katzenberg sued Disney over wages he claimed were owed to him, and while the suit was eventually settled in his favor, his court appearances were constantly pulling his attention away from DreamWorks' follow-up picture, The Road to El Dorado.

By all accounts, this timed out in such a way that the lawsuit did NOT affect Katzenberg's work on The Prince of Egypt.
Katzenberg had wanted to make an animated movie based on the Exodus for a long, long time, but it wasn't gonna happen at Disney.

In 1994, Katzenberg left Disney due to a power dispute with Michael Eisner and Roy Disney, so he then co-founded DreamWorks with two much more famous and rich guys. (The 'K' in the SKG of the DreamWorks logo stands for Katzenberg.)

My darling wife, @dirtynerdygirly.bsky.social, works at a cemetery. This poor little guy was abandoned, in a urine-soaked kitty carrier, beneath a tree. One of the outdoor workers found and brought him into the office, where he and Nicole bonded while she texted me.

Giving an eye glint not to Akane, but to the eyes of her Tanuki suit, is a hilarious extra detail.

The Illusionist (2010 nominee)
I can't remember the last time a film's ending made me turn on it so completely. I felt that this was ramping up to be a truly profound bittersweet tragedy about an artist struggling to take care of someone they love when their art just isn't enough to pay the bills.

How To Train Your Dragon (2010 nominee)
This is on my list of perfect movies that I can watch over and over and over again, and never tire even an iota of. Great and identifiable characters, a script balanced wonderfully between humor and sentimentality, and an insanely beautiful soundtrack.

Shogun (season 1)
GOD this show is amazing. Ignoring how compelling the actual story is, the mere fact that an American-produced television series has the majority of its dialogue in subtitled Japanese, including all the difficulties that characters encounter due to the language barrier, is insane.

Speaking of, season 4 was easily Only Murders's worst, but still a lot of fun. A lot of people have complained that there were just too many dang celebrity cameos this season, which was pretty clearly a meta joke that hopefully won't carry on to season 5.
Bring Theo back damn it.

Death and Other Details (season 1)
Hulu tried to market this as a 'if you liked Only Murders in the Building...' series, but the tones are VASTLY different. Definitely a thriller and not a comedy. I liked the recurring theme of memory being unreliable, but the ending was a letdown.

Orion and the Dark
Netflix's animated films have a habit of having a really interesting premise, really good characters and world-building, and then the ending never quite sticks.
This was no exception, but it also kinda works BECAUSE the ending is weird? I don't want to spoil it, do recommend.

Arcane (season 2)
This show has been talked about to death already and I don't know if I have anything remotely unique to add to the conversation beyond: it gud.
When they inevitably make another League series, I hope it's either Demacia and has Poppy in it, or Noxus and has Riven.
