Well now it is

Yes, use it to augment your effort though, not replace it. Works great with a person in control, but it's not (yet?) good enough for hands-off

sort-imports

When have you ever looked at imports in detail.

That seems like a feature though, I can easily see fatfingering the second t and installing it by accident. I'm a big fan of namespacing tbh (i.e. @something/assert)

Well, not directly, most of the time. Some of it makes it but I find I have to rewrite the bulk anyway to be up to par. I don't currently use full IDEs though so the volume of AI generated code is smaller in my usage

Anecdotally, I've found this exactly on point. I find AI really useful to prototype, but like all prototypes, it's mostly there to throw away. It's basically rubber ducking on steroids, can be really great but you need skill and personal input to really leverage it

It's still very much the sentiment, just no longer funny. I think the tragedy of Jira is that it is built to customise but the moment you do nothing works any more and you are in constant configuration hell. The default setup is fine but tbh much better tools for that around nowadays, IMO.

Wouldn't the entire point of a dumbphone be to not have apps like tiktok on it? 🤔

There's like 6 AI buttons on every Jira screen now and all of them are shit

My take is all this mass fire then hire model is just a trend with no actual evidence of it working. There isn't a control to compare it to.

For all it's praise, what _has_ Netflix achieved with it's supposedly top tier talent? It is essentially the same product it was 10 years ago. Spinning in place, improving iteratively at best. Most actual gains seemed to come from pw sharing cut downs and other user hostile business tactics
January 15, 2025 at 2:55 PM
There is also this thought you can replace with better talent on the open market, but it's massively expensive to replace existing engineers and their institutional knowledge. I doubt it ever fully pays off.

I agree it all depends on the EM/lead, including either managing low performers our or bringing them up to par. My problem is with the stack ranking mass layoffs style approach, it might work a few times but you're sacrificing culture and growth for it. No time to improve people, cut or keep.
January 15, 2025 at 11:07 AM
Trouble is this creates a really poor culture which actual A players don't want to touch with a 10ft pole. So you're left with mostly B (or C) players pretending to be A players

I feel like we've sat on the sidelines and relied on US companies for too long, giving up the internet. We need EU based alternatives that take themselves seriously

Conferences seem like a pre-covid thing to me, like a neat artefact from the past. It's wild to even imagine attending, and I helped organise one!
