Sidenote: Regardless of this general principle of viruses, H5N1 still needs to be taken seriously, if it manages to mutate into efficient human infecting strains then it can get out of control very fast and no one should wait for it to mutate into hopefully more tame strains.

Viruses tend to trend towards less lethal strains overtime (influenza especially). viruses above all else want to replicate and spread, there are exceptions like rabies (lethality is offset by wide range of potential hosts). But in general, viruses value transmissibility over lethality.
