'Both competition and cooperation' – that is an underlying principle of how Google designed its "AI co-scientist" platform to generate ideas and think like a scientist. We talk with the leaders of this project on the latest episode of the Night Science Podcast. @nightsciencepod.bsky.social

This was a fun message to receive ☺️
‘I thought you may be interested to know this - I got my girlfriend a poster of your “it takes two” Nature correspondence for our first anniversary and it is now up on our wall!’ (Posted with permission)

Some say you either have "it" or you don't, and that creativity cannot be learned, but that really misses the point. Creativity is lost in the wrong environment. We need to recognize the "night science" aspect of our work and that we need to nurture it in our training. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Can creativity in science be learnt? These researchers think so
Time pressure gets in the way of ideas. Developing ‘creative oases’ and small grants for risky ideas can encourage innovative thinking in science.

"Itai Yanai, a systems biologist at New York University [..] and a conference co-organizer, explained his research to a co-opted 16-year-old. As he did so, volunteers from the audience posed onstage as ‘genes’, imitating being turned on and off by waving their arms when tapped." Thank you Josie!
I'm grateful to @itaiyanai.bsky.social for explaining his research at Woodstock Bio in Prague to a sixteen-year-old and NOT to "your grandma" or "your elderly Aunt Myrtle."

"What if we tried to daydream together?” Itai Yanai asks.
