The pen was gifted to Clementine Churchill, wife of Sir Winston, by Admiral Wemyss’s nephew, and is now in the Churchill Archives in Cambridge. On a recent tour behind the scenes there I and some colleagues were rather casually shown it, and were utterly dumbstruck. What a thing to see.

One near where I used to live was an absolute legend- and gloried in the name “Mega Bite Cafe.” Fry-ups, unfussy hearty lunches and ketchup bottles. Since I moved away it’s changed its name, had a swanky makeover and gone all sourdough-y.
I feel somewhat responsible.

The “proper caff” is a national institution which, like the chippy and the non-Gastro pub, should be treasured and protected. I keep meaning to compile a definitive list of them before they all disappear.

My first job was at the Portsmouth Evening News. Headquartered in The News Centre at Hilsea, it had hundreds of people working there, and a massive hall at the back for the presses, leading out to the loading bay where dozens of vans took out deliveries. It was a magical factory. Now all gone. 😭

I went out to the supermarket to buy pumpkins and Halloween goodies on *actual Halloween* and found they’d already replaced them with Christmas products.
