OTD 1914 my GG Uncle Pte John William Ellis was KIA at First Ypres, serving in 1st Leicesters. He is remembered at Plugstreet Memorial. He left a wife and child behind. Your duty Jonny done, RIP.

FOXTON (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD, Leicestershire.
This double headstone commemorates a father and his son, who are buried together. Lucy Brown wife and mother must have been heartbroken.

… Pte. Brown had his arm shattered, but continued on through an intense barrage until he arrived at the close support lines and found an officer.
He was so spent that he fell down the dugout steps, but retained consciousness long enough to hand over his message…. He was 19 yrs old!

Major-General Wing Commander of 12th Division. One of four Division Commanders killed during the Battle of Loos 1915. A shell exploded, killing him and his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant C. C. Tower. Wing was 54 and is buried at Noeux-les-Mines Communal

Dud Corner so named after the amount of dud shells found there. Over 20,000 casualties remembered on the walls mostly from the Battle of Loos, including Brigadier General Tom Nickalls, 63 Brigade who was KIA by shell fire.

The Indian Memorial at Neuve Chapelle. The Indians made a huge contribution to the First World War. Not least 11 Victoria Crosses. They arrived in the nick of time in 1914 to save the BEF from destruction

Loughborough’s historic Carillon Tower has re-opened its doors to following approx
£110,000 of improvements. These include new displays of The Great War, the
history of the Carillon Tower and pay tribute to those from Leicestershire who served in the armed
forces.

On 10 September 1915 the 8th Lincoln’s would disembark on French soil. A number of trying night marches would see them heading towards their first ever assault at Loos They, and the General Reserves, would be in for a torrid time.
