With the completion of the Butterfield Ave/Firhouse Road section of the Dodder Greenway it is now possible to cycle ~13km from Ely's Arch to the Bohernabreena Reservoir Park (almost) entirely off road.

Great to attend the Ukrainian Researchers Network event yesterday hosted by @researchireland.ie. The Relativity Group at UCD recently welcomed Oleksii Yanchyshen to work on orbital dynamics around black holes. His work is supported by a RI Supplemental Grant for Displaced Researchers.

Great to see this bridge connecting Phoenix Park and the National War Memorial Gardens is progressing to construction: www.gov.ie/en/office-of...

Made it to Kings Cross about 2 hours later than planned. Sadly there was a fatality on the line, and so our train was cancelled, and the next one re-routed. Almost in Southampton now and looking forward to the hotel.

I had a great time at the #GR24Amaldi16 meeting in Glasgow. Thanks to @cplberry.bsky.social and all the organisers for a fantastic meeting. The cèilidh at the conference dinner was especially fun.

My summer of workshop/conference travel continues with the train from Edinburgh Waverley to London Kings Cross, from there it will onwards to Southampton for the Capra Meeting on Radiation Reaction.

Glasgow!

On the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues at the GR/Amaldi meeting.

The cycle back through town was ok but mostly just painted cycle lanes. Edinburgh looking great as always.
July 12, 2025 at 4:23 PM
The next section is both uphill and on cobbles stones so pretty hard going. At the top protected bike lanes reappear. Next stop is the St. James Quarter to do some shopping and meet my aunt.

The route into the heart of Edinburgh is green and quiet, and passes through a few tunnels. The final one is blocked (I wonder where it goes). The route continues up onto the roads.

This rail trail connects to many others both into the city and back to the water at Leith and on to Portobello.
July 12, 2025 at 2:16 PM
Back into the city. There is an off road route to Leith but I opt for a route with a short section on road. There is a shared coast path and the just before Leith I pick up one of the rail trails again.

Wasn't part of the plan but Cramond is close and I used to go there as a kid so a quick trip along the coast. Cramond Island is accessible at low tidal via a causeway but with the sea fog today you can't even see the island. There is a nice walk along the river

Great food from Bia. I can see why they've won awards. Lots of people are cycling to this market which is great to see .
July 12, 2025 at 1:09 PM
And right next to the beach is a great looking food market and a sauna.
July 12, 2025 at 12:50 PM
Keep following the paths and you make it to the beach!

It's amazing to be cycling this close to the city center and feel like you are cycling along a country path. The route forks off with other cycle route to many locations across the city.

The Roseburn Path follows a disused railway line and now leads all the way to Leith. Sadly, it's use as a walking and cycling path is threatened by plans to run a tram line down it. Whilst more Edinburgh trams would be great, not at the expense of this gem.
July 12, 2025 at 12:09 PM
Next is a cycle through Dalry Community Park. The Council recent added a road and rail bridge which facilitate the connection on to the Roseburn Path.

The next section along the Union Canal is very pleasant. The signage is not clear here and so I used a map to find the route. There is a 'stepped ramp' next which is not nice to cycle down and the lack of signs meant I went through an underpass I didn't need to. Better to use the crossing.

Looks like there is a missing link in the network from The Meadows to the Union Canal. Fortunately the City Council seems to have plans for fix this. A short, unpleasant section on road to reach the canal. www.edinburgh.gov.uk/cycling-walk...
July 12, 2025 at 11:27 AM
The connection on to The Meadows is facilitated via quiet roads and two-way cycle tracks. The signage for the route is very clear. There's a lot of greenery along the route so far.
