He seems a bit overwhelming at first, but when you get to talk to him you start to like him a lot more. Dirtjaw's crazy, but also a pretty cool guy!

It's basically telling the rig what parts of the mesh it can deform!
So, in this example I have the upper right leg bone selected. The red parts are completely deformed and affected when that bone moves, and the blue parts not at all. I'm doing all this in Blender
