Unfortunately I fell foul of this predatory practice and was ripped off as a result, despite having previously opted out of auto renewal.

So, if you decide to extend or upgrade a subscription please recheck your account renewal preferences to avoid making the same mistake I did.

This article reads like a knee jerk reaction to one source, which is locked behind a pay wall.

"Smart" devices are not the problem, take them away and people will simple find another means of access. I would be more inclined to focus on the software and its incentives.
