Winter poem:

"The Memory Of Birds"
Against desaturated blackbird on bare branch: The Memory Of Birds Mid December, and the grey briefly flashes blue, and there's a flare of unexpectedly, painfully pure sunlight, making harsh geometry of the kitchen window. Outside, a blackbird makes eye contact with me. Generations of that family have raised their young in this modest garden, nesting in trees my mother planted, many lifetimes ago. So I quietly apologise that I won't be around to meet the new additions in the spring. Sparrows are still silhouettes on the harsh tangle of bare branches; hard little knots in the wood, tied against forgetting. I wonder what will happen when nobody remembers how the orange blossom smelt in the summer, or which rosebush you hid my ring under, or which cat got buried where. Nothing, I suppose. These things only matter because we decide they do. Maybe the birds will be our historians. I feel the frantic flutter of their tiny hearts. I mourn every hapless hatchling that realised too late it was falling, not flying. I hope that the trees and rosebushes will remain, even when we are gone. Then suddenly it's too bright. *Early Morning, Late November* [not 100% fixed on the title] The day breaks into jagged, brittle shards. Blood wells on the horizon, sliced too sharp to feel, but deeper than it looks. The reassuring, antiseptic sting and the increasingly suspect promise of salvation through pain. The sun comes down, bright as bleach. The cold burns the colour right out of the roses. Frozen spiderwebs shudder to a vibration that rises through the boots. Shadows squat, trapped flat in the overpriced asphalt, awaiting eviction or the Rapture. And somewhere, one person will kill another simply by not choosing not to, and maybe nobody will ever learn of the crime, not even the killer. Copycats will emerge, and copies of copies. Traffic will pile up behind the hearses, to eulogies of car horns and impatient indifference. Maybe nobody ever really learns anything. I zip up my coat and fix my mask against the morning and its inherently murderous intentions. Frosted spiderweb on a metal signpost. The sun gleams off the trunk of the post, stippled with droplets, some frozen, some thawing.
